We’ll be starting 2010 with a bang in Flint this month with a performance of Gustav Mahler’s seventh Symphony. It is always a joy to perform Mahler’s works. The trumpet parts in his symphonies are well-written and as musically gratifying as they are challenging. Come on out for an exciting evening!

Also on the program will be the Reinecke Concerto in D major for Flute and Orchestra, featuring 2009 Byrd Competition winner Conor Nelsen.

Handel’s Messiah in Northville

I will be performing Handel’s Messiah several times throughout the Metro-Detroit area this holiday season. The first of these has become a holiday tradition for me, as I’ve performed this production all but one of the last 15 years.

This performance will take place at First Presbyterian Church in beautiful downtown Northville. From the FPC website (where more information and directions are available):

Handel’s most popular and enduring work is his oratorio based on the life of Jesus Christ, “Messiah”. The Northville Concert Chorale presents this magnificent choral work each December to a full house. The chorus is accompanied by organ, harpsichord, and the Michigan Sinfonietta Orchestra of Ann Arbor. Professional soloists sing the solo roles.

FSO Nutcracker

Once again the Christmas season is upon us. What better way to get things rolling than with a performance or two of Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Ballet.

As summer draws to a close, it’s time for the fall performance season to begin. To start my fall season, I’ll be sitting in on second trumpet with the Ann Arbor Symphony for their season opening Beethoven Festival. Not surprisingly, we’ll be performing an all Beethoven program.

Flint Symphony

The final subscription concert of the Flint Symphony’s 2008-2009 season will kick off with a performance by the brass section of Dukas’ Fanfare to La Peri, followed by selections by Shostakovich, Debussy and Poulenc.

We’ll be led by guest conductor Nir Kabaretti, who will be making his FSO debut appearance.
